Carter William Humphrey found himself at the age of 13 in an unlikely place in Salt Lake City: a recording studio. Carter was hired as a bass player for a studio session to record another school's song. Thus Carter embarked on his odyssey of music production.

While pursuing a degree in Music Recording in the 1980's at the University of Southern California, Carter held music industry jobs which included production crew with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, working under world renowned Cellist, Lynn Harrell. At this time, Carter began recording primarily classical music in the field.

After graduating in 1991, Carter held a number of staff positions at recording studios including technical staff at Larrabee Sound Studios, and engineering staff at the Record Plant. Carter also detoured into film post-production at ACME Soundworks in the early nineties.

In 1992, he recorded the musical score for the feature film "The Cool Surface" starring James Cameron and a then unknown Teri Hatcher. In 1993, he began a yearlong studio association with legend Brian Wilson who was working on music for his autobiographical show, "I Was Not Made for These Times."

In the 90's, Carter garnered engineering credits with Salt N' Pepper and Queen Latifah, The Mills Brothers, The Kottonmouth Kings, as well as Pro Tools efforts with Dr. Dre, Daz & Corrupt, and Tupac Shakur.

In the New Millennium, Carter began a 4 year effort which tracks and mixes for Rod Stewart's The Great American Songbook series volumes 1-4 which included duets by Cher and Queen Latifah. All 4 volumes debuted in the top 10 and all 4 were Grammy nominated including The Great American Songbook III: Stardust, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's album pop chart and won a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album.

Since 2000, Carter has recorded Levon Helm of The Band, Julie Andrews, Carly Simon, Anthony Krizan of the Spin Doctors, and Jaime Cohen and Dan Myers of From Good Homes. Carter has also recorded acts live at The Black Potatoe Musicfest from 2004-2006, which have included performances by Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, The Holmes Brothers, Jimmy McGriff, and Hayseed Dixie.

Carter continues to work in the music industry specializing primarily in mixing as well as developing and producing new artists.
